Getting Back on the Road to a Healthy Heart

Once you have been diagnosed and a course of treatment determined, it’s critically important to follow your doctor’s directions. If medications have been prescribed, take them exactly as directed, in the proper doses and on schedule. Be sure to schedule all necessary follow-up appointments so that your physician can keep track of your progress and head off any problems that may arise.

Your doctor or physical therapist may also have set up an exercise routine for you. It is important that you maintain it to facilitate your recovery. Other heart healthy habits that will keep you going strong include:

  • Reducing Stress – Take ½ hour each day to listen to relaxing music, enjoy an outdoor stroll or try yoga or meditation. (There are many yoga and meditation DVDs available to use at home).
  • Eat Healthfully – Add more fruits and vegetables and reduce fatty and “junk” foods.
  • Stop Smoking – Discuss the different options available with your physician. Team up with a smoker friend; promise yourself a reward for success.
  • Monitoring Your Blood Pressure – Have it checked at least annually; more frequently if your physician recommends it.
  • Keeping Your Diabetes Under Control – Diabetics are more likely to have cardiac disease. Be vigilant about your diet and medications.
  • Maintaining Your Weight – Waist measurements of over 40” (for men) and 35” (for women) lead to a higher risk of heart disease and diabetes.
