Procedure Prep

COLONOSCOPY

1. You must have someone present to drive you home after your procedure.

2. Any blood thinners and/or non-steroidals or arthritis medicines such as Celebrex, Naprosyn, Ibuprofen, Aleve, Mobic, etc. should be stopped 5 five days before the procedure.

3. It is very important to take any medication for heart disease or high bood pressure with a sip of water at least 2 hours before the procedure.

Low Fiber Foods (3 - 4 days before procedure)
All beverages without pulp 
Ice Cream
Refined pasta

Candy
Mashed Potatoes
Sherbet

Cheese
Meat, poultry, fish
White bread w/o crust

Crackers other than whole wheat
Milk products
White rice

Eggs
Pastries w/o seeds, nuts or fruit  

Gelatin Pudding  

Foods to Avoid
Fruits
Salads

Grains
Seeds

Nuts
Vegetables

Oatmeal
Whole Grain Cereals

Preparation One Day Before Procedure

1. Clear liquids (examples below) ALL DAY - NO SOLID FOOD.

Apple juice
Chicken broth
Popsicles*
Water
Beef broth
Italian Ice*
Sodas (Coke, 7-up, etc.)
White grape juice
Black coffee (no cream
Jello*
Tea  

* no blue, green, red or purple colors!

2. Start drinking your prep solution as per directions that you were given.

DO NOT EAT or DRINK ANYTHING BLUE, GREEN, PURPLE or RED. NO FRUIT JUICE WITH PULP, NO MILK or CREAM.

NOTHING BY MOUTH AFTER MIDNIGHT - DO NOT HAVE GUM OR CANDY THE MORNING OF THE PROCEDURE.

It is very important to follow these instructions carefully! Your colon must be completely clean in order for the physician to have a clear view. IF NOT, THE PREP WILL HAVE TO BE REPEATED AND THE PROCEDURE RESCHEDULED.

 

EGD (Upper Endoscopy)

1. You must have someone present to drive you home after your procedure.

2. Any blood thinners and/or non-steroidals or arthritis medicines such as Celebrex, Naprosyn, Ibuprofen, Aleve, Mobic, etc. should be stopped 7 five days before the procedure. If you have coronary artery stents, you need to continue taking aspirin as needed.

3. It is very important to take any medication for heart disease or high bood pressure with a sip of water at least 2 hours before the procedure.

4. NOTHING BY MOUTH AFTER MIDNIGHT THE NIGHT BEFORE YOUR PROCEDURE. DO NOT HAVE GUM OR CANDY THE MORNING OF THE PROCEDURE.

5. Patients who are diabetic may have sips of clear liquids up until two hours before the procedure.
