Melhim Bou Alwan, M.D., has been named a recipient of WellStar Health System’s Quality and Safety Leaders Award for Fall 2017.
WellStar Health System presented one award to a physician at each of its 11 hospital locations, as well as one to a physician in the WellStar Medical Group and one to a member of its Pediatric Service Line.
WellStar honored Dr. Bou Alwan, a hospitalist with WellStar Medical Group Hospital Medicine, with the award for his leadership of WellStar WGMC’s antibiotic stewardship program. Antimicrobial stewardship is a systematic effort to educate and persuade prescribers of antimicrobials, including antibiotics, to follow evidence-based prescribing. This helps reduce the overuse of antibiotics, and thus, antibiotic resistance.
Dr. Bou Alwan has helped develop appropriate criteria of ICU and Step-Down Unit admissions. Dr. Bou Alwan also created a communication plan and data analysis that identified opportunities to improve patient flow by reducing observation hours, which, in turn, led to the creation and successful opening of WGMC’s Clinical Decision Unit.
Additionally, he is the Black Belt and Skilled Nursing Facility Champion for the SNF Readmissions team, seeking to reduce readmissions from our two associated nursing homes. Dr. Bou Alwan is devoted to the delivery and promotion of high quality, safe patient care.
