Florence Hand Home has received a 5-star rating on “Nursing Home Compare,” an online resource compiled by The U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, also known as CMS. CMS also found zero deficiencies during an onsite visit and survey at Florence Hand Home earlier this year.
The 5-star rating is calculated using multiple measures, beginning with the survey results from the last three licensure surveys. During these surveys, all areas of patient care and services are inspected for deficient practices and regulatory compliance.
“The surveyors look at the care that is provided from planning for admission, to follow-up after discharge, and every aspect in between,” said Robin Lambeth, executive director of Florence Hand Home, a nursing home of WellStar West Georgia Medical Center. “The survey process ensures that the residents are given quality care in all clinical and social areas.”
CMS has recently expanded its focus to observe the quality of life provided to nursing home residents and to ensure that a safe environment is provided for all in the 15,000 nursing home facilities across the United States.
CMS surveyors observe interactions between staff, families and residents, as well as the care being provided, Lambeth said. “They also conduct interviews with the residents, families and staff to ensure care plans match the residents’ needs and that all staff are aware of those needs.
“Expectations are that residents are treated with dignity, and surveyors note their participation in activities and the quality of the activities planned for our residents,” Lambeth said. “Our goal is to ensure we are working to make a home for our residents, not just a room. The surveyors expect to find the staff is respecting the privacy of our residents at all times and that we are working to form relationships with our interactions. “
Sixty-three out of the 364 nursing homes in Georgia achieved 5-Star rating this year. Searchable data can be found at medicare.gov.
