Judy King named WellStar West Georgia's Volunteer of the Year

A woman with a heart for helping and encouraging others has been named WellStar West Georgia Medical Center’s 2018 Volunteer of the Year.

Judy King, who began volunteering at the hospital in June 2015, was recognized with WellStar WGMC Auxiliary’s top honor at an annual luncheon to thank the 65 volunteers who donate their time to the hospital, Florence Hand Home and Twin Fountains Home.

King can be found on Tuesdays at Florence Hand Home, where she gives manicures to residents, helps with Bingo, and delivers newspapers and other mail to the rooms.

“She always takes time to visit with the residents and provide them companionship,” according to her nominator. “She and her husband also come to Florence Hand Home quarterly to share a devotional with our residents.”

King also volunteers at Expressions from the Heart, the hospital’s gift shop, on Monday afternoons and Thursday mornings.

“She’s very calm under pressure and doesn’t let the ‘little things’ bother her,” according to the nomination. “Judy is always willing to do whatever is needed.”

King began volunteering after she retired from Aerotron AirPower as an accounts payable clerk. In addition to serving at WellStar West Georgia, she also is an active member at Lakeview Baptist Church and is a Woman’s Missionary Union team leader with the Troup Baptist Association.

Jean Lewis, WGMC’s director of Volunteer Services, said volunteers are currently needed at the hospital and WGMC’s two nursing homes.

“Volunteers are a vital part of the West Georgia Medical Center community,” Lewis said. “Sometimes their work isn’t tangible when their job is reassuring an apprehensive patient or sharing hope to a worried visitor. But that is just as important as other duties, such as delivering and reading mail to nursing home residents, ringing up sales in the gift shop, or serving as a liaison between families and caregivers in the ICU.”
