New physician gives new meaning to 'world-class' healthcare

Growing up, Dr. Olumide Ajayi had a great role model to help him achieve his dream of becoming a physician: his dad.

“He’s retired now, but my dad was a cardiologist, and my mother is a retired nurse,” said Dr. Ajayi, who is from Lagos, Nigeria. “And my younger sister is a physician in London.”

Dr. Ajayi is now far from home, as he recently joined WellStar Medical Group Family Medicine on Lafayette Parkway in LaGrange.  He takes WellStar Health System’s mission to provide world-class health care to a new level, as his medical education and experience spans from Canada, Antigua, and the United States.

After high school, Dr. Ajayi moved to London for a year before moving to Ottawa, Canada, to earn a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. He received a Doctor of Medicine degree from the American University of Antigua in St. John’s.

He then landed in Grand Forks, N.D., where he completed his residency at the Grand Forks Family Medicine Residency with Altru Health System. After his residency, he practiced medicine for five years in Minnesota.

“I really enjoyed my time in Minnesota, especially because my main job was to deliver babies,” the primary care physician said. “But now, I’m already very excited about the many different ages of people I get to see here in LaGrange.

“With family medicine, I not only get to see my patients as babies, but I get to be a part of their health care as they grow older,” he said.  “I get to see people of all ages for their acute care needs and also for chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension. From my patients I’ve met so far, I just love how welcoming and friendly everyone is here.”

Dr. Ajayi said he also enjoys helping patients take an active role in their health care.

“I like to involve them in the decision-making,” he said. “I see a lot of patients for preventive care, including women’s health, and it is very rewarding to see when I may have made a difference in helping a patient learn to take a more active role in their health and well-being.”

Dr. Ajayi’s wife and 2-year-old daughter are still in Minnesota as his wife finishes nursing school and prepares to move their belongings to the South.

“We FaceTime every day,” he said. “I’m flying there in October, and then they’ll move here in December. I can’t wait to have them here and introduce them to LaGrange.”

At WellStar Medical Group Family Medicine, Dr. Ajayi is welcomed by Dr. Srinivas Bramhadevi, nurse practitioners Candace Wortham and Kevin Knight, and other WellStar team members who all provide primary care needs to pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients.

WellStar Medical Group Family Medicine is located at 1497 Lafayette Parkway. The practice is open weekdays by appointment, and it also offers Saturday hours from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with no appointment needed. For information, call (706) 880-7335.
