The Women's Health Center is not only focused on women's health care needs but also teaching them how to stay well. The center offers the following classes:

Breastfeeding Basics

Taught by certified lactation consultants, this class will help expectant mothers learn the basics of breastfeeding – from techniques and positioning to overcoming common challenges.

Infant CPR and Safety

This class is ideal for parents, grandparents, and babysitters. It provides hands-on training in infant CPR, as well as infant safety measures.

Lamaze Prepared Childbirth Series (5 Weeks)

Lamaze Prepared Childbirth Series (5 week program)

This 5 week series is designed for expectant mothers and their support person to assist them to have the best pregnancy, birth, and early parenting experiences. Lamaze is no longer just about breathing! It is about taking the mystery out of childbirth and giving you the confidence to labor your way.

This is a 5 week course. Each class is two hours and thirty minutes. 

Week 1: Introduction to Lamaze, and Six Healthy Birth Practices, Pain Perception, Nutrition, Anatomy and Physiology of Pregnancy, True versus False Labor, and Introduction to Breathing/Relaxation.

Week 2: Stages and Phases of Labor, Early Labor, Hospital Admission, Breathing and Relaxation, and Labor Support.

Week 3: Active and Transition Phases of Labor, Pain Management, Medical Interventions, Positioning, Labor Support, and Second Stage of Labor.

Week 4: Labor Stations providing hands on practice of various labor positions and comfort measures, Cesarean Section, Recovery and Postpartum Care.

Week 5: Newborn characteristics, Newborn Care and Safety, Breastfeeding, Visit from previous class member to share birthing experience with class.

Lamaze classes are interactive and informative. Your instructor will thoroughly explain the changes your body will go through and what you can expect during pregnancy, birth and beyond.

Prepared Childbirth, Seminar (8-hours)

Prepared Childbirth Seminar(Fast Track)

This 8-hour seminar is designed for expectant mothers and their support person to learn about childbirth topics in a fun, comfortable, and respectful class environment.

  • Delivery,

Safe Sitter

Safe Sitter: "Better Sitters Today. Better Parents Tomorrow."

What is Safe Sitter?  Medically accurate, competency-based, highly structured babysitting preparation course designed for young adolescents (11-15 years of age).

Why Take Safe Sitter? Students will learn, demonstrate, and pass a written exam outlining the following:

Care of choking infant/child,

Infant/Child CPR,

Injury Prevention and Injury Management,

Safety for the Sitter,

Child Care Essentials,

Behavior Management,

Babysitting as a Business,

Upon completion of the course, students will receive a Safe Sitter course completion card.

Classes are limited to 12 participants and are held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at West Georgia Health's Women's Health Center.

Required age of participants is 11-15 years of age.

Price for the course is $45.00 per child.

Teen Pregnancy Class

Teen Pregnancy Class 

The Women’s Health Center at West Georgia Health and District 4 Public Health offers a teen pregnancy class for expectant mothers, 12-19 years of age.

Topics include:

 

  • Prenatal care and nutrition
  • Labor/delivery/recovery
  • Newborn care and characteristics
  • Breastfeeding
  •  Parenting Skills
  • Information about the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, Department of Family Children’s Services (DFACS) and the First Steps Program
  • A tour of the new maternal infant unit at West Georgia Medical Center is also offered.
