Questions and Answers about Women's Health
How do I know if I am at risk for osteoporosis? There are a number of factors that determine a woman’s risk of developing osteoporosis (thinning of the bones). They include age, family history of the condition, having a thin frame or low body mass index and an excess of thyroid hormone. If you are concerned, schedule an appointment with your physician.
When should I have my first mammogram? This is a decision you and your physician should make together based on your health, family history and other risk factors. Most physicians recommend having a baseline mammogram at age 35, but your health status may call for earlier or later screening.
What is a Pap Smear? A Pap smear, also called a Pap test, can detect the presence of cervical cancer in women. During the procedure, a small number of cells is collected from your cervix—the low, narrow end of your uterus. The Pap smear is done in your physician’s office. Women should have their first Pap smear once they become sexually active.
I’m pregnant. When should I start seeing a doctor for pre-natal care? As soon as you know you are pregnant, you should schedule a pre-natal appointment with an obstetrician (a physician who specializes in pre-natal care and delivery). Your obstetrician will set up a series of appointments to keep track of your health (as well as your baby’s) throughout your pregnancy.
Should I be worried about heart disease? You shouldn’t worry, but you should be vigilant. Heart disease is the #1 killer of American women, so you should work to minimize the risk factors which include smoking, being overweight, having high blood pressure, a family history of heart disease, diabetes and excessive stress. If you are concerned, schedule an appointment with your physician.
I have very painful periods. Is there anything I can do? There are a number of factors that can cause pain during menstruation. Endometriosis, uterine fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease or cervical stenosis are some possible causes. Your physician can help determine the cause and prescribe treatment for these conditions.
