Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)

WellStar West Georgia Medical Center has a state-of-the-art MRI suite to its fleet. The GE Optima™ 450w with GEM Suite, an advanced system from GE Healthcare, is designed to help maximize comfort for patients undergoing MR exams.

The Optima includes a 60-inch TV and mood lighting to comfort patients undergoing imaging, as well as the ability to play personal music during a session for further comfort, with video requiring an Apple iPad® and music requiring an Apple iPod®, iPhone® or iPad.

It features:

  • Silent Scan technology, for scanning without the "knocking" sound provided from other MRIs.
  • An increased table weight, allowing for patients up to 500 pounds rather than the former capacity of 350.
  • A 70 centimeter wide bore magnet to add more space for increased comfort.
  • The only locally available breast MR imaging.

The machine's Silent Scan takes away the previous "pounding" sound, allowing for reduced patient anxiety while being scanned. The regular sound of an MRI can register above 100 decibels.

The new MRI enables WGMC radiologists to perform breast MRIs, which previously were not available in the west Georgia region. Breast MRIs, which typically are performed following a breast biopsy and cancer diagnosis, help determine the extent of a patient’s breast cancer.
