Physical Therapy Services for Women

A woman has special health care needs. From the time she begins menstruating, through her childbearing years and menopause, her reproductive system is an important part of her overall health. But sometimes, various symptoms can cause a woman both physical pain and emotional discomfort.

Staffed by licensed professionals, who specialize in women’s health issues, the Women’s Physical Therapy program at WellStar West Georgia Medical Center aims to help women improve their functionality and relieve the pain associated with many of these health conditions. Physical therapists work closely with each woman’s physician to develop an individualized program to restore her to optimum health and provide her with the tools she needs to maintain her health at home.

Women’s physical therapy allows patients to take a more active role in managing their health,” said Tara Wilkie, a physical therapist with WGMC. “It is an excellent compliment to standard urologic, obstetric and gynecologic care.

The program incorporates a variety of techniques to treat health conditions unique to women including:

  • Abdominal/Breast/Pelvic surgical rehabilitation.
  • Fibromyalgia.
  • Lower back and leg pain.
  • Lymphedema (localized fluid retention and tissue swelling) management.
  • Osteoporosis.
  • Pelvic pain.
  • Pelvic floor weakness.
  • Post-mastectomy and post-hysterectomy treatment.
  • Prenatal/postpartum.
  • Urinary and fecal incontinence.
  • Special exercise education.
  • Electrical stimulation.
  • Biofeedback.
  • Behavior modification.
