Dr. Robert Coggins, a gastroenterologist with WellStar Medical Group has been named the 2019 Physician of the Year at WellStar West Georgia Medical Center. The award, given annually since 2007, recognizes an outstanding physician whose contributions have made a significant impact on patient care, the medical staff and WellStar West Georgia Medical Center.
Coggins grew up not too far from where he practices in LaGrange. He received his undergraduate degree from Auburn University, then earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University. After that, he completed a fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and then served as a senior associate consultant and instructor of medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology at the Mayo Clinic Jacksonville in Jacksonville, Florida before starting his practice in LaGrange in 1991.
“There is something to be said for a doctor who could have practiced anywhere, but chose to come back home to serve the people around him, give back to his community and make significant contributions to our hospital in a leadership role,” said Coleman Foss, president, WellStar West Georgia Medical Center. Coggins has served as president of the Medical Staff, chairman of the Performance Improvement Committee, which sets quality and safety standards both hospital-wide and at the system level and with WellStar Medical Group. He has also served on the Board of Trustees for the hospital.
