Brittany Calhoun, RN, Clinical Informatics Specialist
August 2019 - Employee of the Month
Brittany Calhoun, our August 2019 Team Member of the month, has worked at WellStar West Georgia for 17 years and currently works as a Clinical Informatics Specialist to assist our clinical staff and providers with any issues they may have with Epic.
She also has served in Med Surg and Oncology, Surgical Services, Revenue Management, the Nursing Float Pool, as a Value Analyst Coordinator, and as a House Supervisor. Brittany earned an associate’s in Applied Science in Nursing from Southern Union in 2002 and her BSN from Jacksonville State in 2011.
Our chief nurse anesthetist, Shannon Stansell, nominated Brittany as the Team Member of the Month because of her tireless efforts in revitalizing nurse sedation documentation monitoring.
One of Shannon’s duties as chief anesthetist is to monitor nurse sedation facility-wide and then report her findings to Performance Improvement. But after the hospital transitioned to Epic, she initially wasn’t able to see which patients received sedation or review the nurse of physician documentation. Brittany suggested asking for a report-build within Epic and assisted every step of the way throughout multiple departments during the report-build and also with Epic sedation flowsheet documentation.
Shannon said this is only one example of Brittany’s excellence and commitment to her role. She said Brittany has a servant’s heart and a drive to help others with assuring our documentation is up to standard and meets compliance regulations.
Brittany said she loves working at WellStar West Georgia because “it just feels like home.” Actually, it may feel that way even more to her than to others, for both her in-laws work here: MaryLois Calhoun, our director of Surgical Services, and Randy Calhoun, a House Supervisor. Brittany and her husband, Erin, who teaches at LaGrange High School, have four children, ages 22, 12, 6 and 4.
